9A: Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

  • Who: So when I conducted another round of interviews, I found that there are groups of people that are outside the immediate realm that I originally thought of. These people could be best described as individuals that have no direct, personal responsibility for how these individuals with disabilities live their lives in the work sector.
Two people that I interviewed were people that volunteer with the students with disabilities on campus. They both said how they interact with these students, but they don't see how there would be a direct need for them to be employed. When I mentioned opening up a coffee shop that only hired individuals with disabilities, they both said that it would be a good idea, but there would have to be a pull factor that attracted people to go to this coffee shop instead of other ones. These two people should have an unmet need but don't because they are not in direct responsibility of these individuals. They both said it is a good service idea, but there would need to be other factors incorporated into this process that keep people interested.

Another person that I interviewed was a dad of an individual with disabilities. He said this would be a good idea if it could pan out, but some wouldn't see the need for it. He said how his family has had the preconceived notion that their son would just never had a job, and because of this, they have been preparing for the situation. He said they have moved on from the hope that their child would get a job and have instead have gotten him involved in different activities.

Two other people that I interviewed were teachers of these individuals. They told me that their main job is to help prepare these students for the world outside of the classroom. They said that they realize that not everyone with a disability will find a job, but their main goal is to help teach them everyday skills and knowledge. They both fall outside this boundary because their main goal is to prepare these students, and not necessarily prepare them for the workforce. They also mentioned how a coffee shop may be too much work for these individuals. They suggested maybe trying to think of something less work intensive.

  • What: It was mentioned a few times that a coffee shop would help the immediate problem in a particular community, but at a national level, there would need to be more attention on this problem. The corporations will still continue to disregard the need for a diverse work force and will stray away from things that could cause problems.
  • Why: I feel like the need is different based on the relationship between the individual with disabilities and the person. With a direct relationship, most people would see the need for individuals with disabilities finding a job where they belong. It also all depends on how the person views the world around them and if they see a need to promote diversity. Needs are met and unmet all depending in the person and how they view the situation.

Inside the Boundary                                          Outside the Boundary
Who:                          Parents of students with disabilities                     Parents that find other ways for
that see a need for their child to have                   their kids to get involved.
                                   a job.

The students with disabilities that                        Teachers that realize it would
want to find a job.                                                 take a bigger idea to make a
                                                                                                                 national impact.
People that have a direct relationship
with these individuals.                                          People that do not have a                                                                                                                           direct relationship with these                                                                                                                     individuals.

What:                         To help employ people with disabilities.              To employ everyone with a                                                                                                                       disability.
To help diversify the work force.

Why:                          Everyone deserves to be able to have a place      These individuals have
where they feel like they belong.                         different activities that they                                                                                                                      could participate in.
Trying to find different ways to include these
individuals and help them feel included.

  1. I enjoyed reading your post. I think it is a problem that people do not typically think of. I liked how you said the “who” is actually the individuals who are taking care of people with a disability on a daily basis. I’m sure that is not an easy job, and it is significant that people with disabilities can have the opportunity to live as much as a normal life as possible. My post is about giving a dental service with students in training to people who cannot afford dental insurance or a dental cleaning every 6 months. They both are ways to help the people who are often forgot. Again great post!

  2. Hi Logan, I think that your idea is great. People normally don't think about disabled people because it is not relevant to most people. I think that it is important for disabled people to live as normal of a life as possible because I think it improves their quality of life. Places like Publix already do this but I think that more places should incorporate it.
